Healthier Homemade Chex Mix

If you’ve ever tried making Chex Mix and thought, “Why does this taste like nothing?”,  trust me, I have BEEN THERE. It took me years to perfect this recipe because every version I tried before was just… bland.   I wanted something bold, and impossible to mess up. The key? Just a touch of hot sauce,  it wakes up all the flavors without making it spicy. This is our go to holiday snack mix, and we gift batches to neighbors, teachers, and family every year. It’s always the first thing to disappear.

Course: easy recipes, Snack
Cuisine: American
Keyword: chex mix, holiday chex, snack mix
Servings: 8

Equipment

  • 1 large oven safe pan I used the disposable roasting pans
  • 1 small glass dish to melt butter
  • 1 medium bowl

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 8 cups Rice Chex
  • 4 cups Corn Chex
  • 3 cups Cheez Its
  • 4 cups stick pretzels
  • 3 cups Cheerios
  • 3 cups mixed nuts

Seasoning

  • 2 sticks salted butter melted
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Lawry's
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp pink Himalayan salt
  • 6 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Frank's Red Hot Sauce more if you like it spicy

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250f.
  • In your large pan, add in 8 cups Rice Chex, 4 cups Corn Chex, 3 cups Cheez Its, 4 cups stick pretzels and 3 cups Cheerios. Stir until completely combined.
  • Melt the 2 sticks salted butter in the microwave (be sure to cover with a paper towel) for splatter.
  • To the melted butter add in 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tbsp Lawry's, 1 tbsp onion powder, 1 tsp pink Himalayan salt, 6 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce and 1 tsp Frank's Red Hot Sauce. Whisk until well combined.
  • Pour over the dry mixture and mix gently but really well. I wear gloves and be sure to get the very bottom so that all of the pieces are evenly coated. Let site 5-10 minutes before baking.
  • Place in the oven at 250f and set a timer to stir every 15 minutes. Bake for and hour total.
  • Remove and let cool. It will be a little bit soft when you first pull it out. Cool completely before eating.

Storage + Freezer Tips

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks — perfect for packing into jars or gift bags.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months in gallon-size silicone bags.
  • To thaw, leave at room temp for 20–30 minutes.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Gluten-free: use GF pretzels + GF Chex.
  • Extra bold flavor: double the Worcestershire and add an extra ½ tsp garlic powder.
  • Spicy version: add extra Frank’s or ½ tsp cayenne.
  • Nut-free: skip the nuts and add extra Chex or pretzels.
  • Holiday gifting version: get little tins at Homegoods (every single year this is where I find the tins)
